Field Sketching in Black & WhiteBlack and White sketches are ideally suited for hiking or traveling with others, since you can sketch somewhat on the sly. It is a great way to pass time in airports, doctor offices, or long performance intermissions. I often sketch from the in-flight magazines while on airplanes. When hiking, it is a great way to appreciate where you are. They capture the mood of the moment in a subtle way. Sometimes I even prefer my sketches of a trip to the photographs I took! Quick Sketches use even fewer lines to convey the impression of a subject. The gesture of the object or person is more important than detail. Any detail is only suggested and most Quick Sketches are completed in a few minutes. When done in marker, sketching forces the artist to consider each line more carefully prior to drawing, thus avoiding the tendency to be timid. My Zoo sketches below are good examples of this.
