En Plein Air versus Studio Painting
En Plein Air is painting directly from life, literally outdoors! Its immediacy creates a special freshness to work. Usually, looser, impressionistic works are the result. To enjoy plein air painting, the artist must also be comfortable with the additional challenge of the elements - sun & heat, wind, bugs, even rain or snow, or passersby.
In studio work -- a more controlled environment-- the artist can day-dream more while painting. There is more time to explore new ideas and more complicated techniques and composition. Here, the artist connects subliminally and emotionally with a scene or people or experiences in their mind, even when painting from photographs.
